Who do you work with?:
We mainly work with the street-based trans sex workers who work in the Zona del Valle in Mexico (Mexico City and Mexico state). To a lesser extent we also work with women street-based sex workers in Mexico City.
How are sex workers involved in your organisation?:
Involvement begins from the organisation itself as all its members are sex workers. Another form of participation has been in community testing and in the delivery of projects on behalf of the organisation.
Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?:
Oppose the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and support its recognition as work
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Oppose human rights abuses, including coercive programming, mandatory testing, raids and forced rehabilitation
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face:
2.- Un segundo reto que ubicamos es el nivel de violencia que se ejerce en especial contra trabajadoras sexuales trans, Méxicoes el segundo país a nivel internacional con mayor cantidad de asesinatos de mujeres trans, y en su gran mayoría son mujeres trans trabajadoras sexuales 1) One of the main challenges is the recognition of sex work as work, this impacts on the stigma and discrimination towards those who do sex work, leaving them in a vulnerable situation in terms of their human rights and avoiding accessing services such as health, security, justice. 2) A second challenge is the level of violence that is faced particularly by trans sex workers. Mexico has the second highest rate of murder of trans women in the world, and the vast majority are trans women sex workers.
