Who do you work with?:
GAURAV is a community based organisation working for the promotion, protection and advance of sex workers' rights. GAURAV works with male and transgender sex workers, clients and spouses.
How are sex workers involved in your organisation?:
Representing the experiences and realities of marginalised and vulnerable men who have sex with men and male sex workers, our organisation is a sex worker led CBO with an all membership base of sex workers. The organisation is recognised by FHI as one of the premier sex worker CBOs working on male and transgender sex workers. The organisation is a federation of local self groups of sex workers through a democratic process.
Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?:
Oppose the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and support its recognition as work
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
Advocate for the economic empowerment and social inclusion of sex workers as sex workers
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face:
Campaigning on issues to decriminalise transgender and male sex work and on issues such as the abuse and violence against them.
Describe other areas of your work:
GAURAV works in Mumbai metro, it also works at Maharastra State level in two more districts viz. Nagpur and Aurangabad.
