New appointments at NSWP
NSWP is pleased to announce the following appointments, who will be joining the NSWP Secretariat.
Gillian Galbraith – OFFICE MANAGER
Gillian has 24 years experience as a business studies lecturer in Edinburgh before joining NSWP as a temporary Office Manager late last year. She used her business knowledge and experience to help us further develop the administration and financial management systems in NSWP. Gillian successfully applied for the ‘permanent’ post when it was advertised publicly. Gillian will be based in Scotland.
Laura Agustín – RESEARCH FOR SEX WORK EDITOR
Laura has worked in HIV prevention, literacy, language-teaching, community and academic research and first worked as an editor in the 1970s. She is author of Sex at the Margins: Migration, Labour markets and the Rescue Industry (Zed Books) and of a special edition of Sexualities on the Cultural Study of Commercial Sex, an alternative to reductionist prostitution theory. Active in the sex worker and migrant rights movements since the mid-90s, she has challenged anti-trafficking policy through public speaking, articles in a variety of publications and blogs at The Naked Anthropologist.Laura will be based in Sweden.
Jenn Clamen - POLICY OFFICER: consensus building around sex work, human rights and the law
Jenn has been active in the Canadian and global sex worker rights movements since 2000. She has experience with local, national and international sex worker communities on a variety of projects that address law reform, community development and mobilising communities into action. She is an active member of Stella, Montreal’s sex worker organization, since 2002. Jenn is also an educator in university and community settings, teaching on issues and realities affecting criminalised and marginalised communities, specifically on: human rights, public space and poverty, women in conflict with the law and community organising.Jenn will be based in Canada.
Kemal Ordek - POLICY OFFICER: advocacy and campaigns
Kemal has been a trans* and sex workers' rights activist in Turkey since 2007. S/he has also worked as a sex worker. S/he has worked for local and national trans* and sex workers' rights NGOs and carried out national and international advocacy work for around gender identity and expression; and sex workers' rights. Kemal coordinated a national legal assistance system, working to support trans* sex worker victims of ill-treatment and torture. Kemal sits on the Steering Committee of Transgender Europe, and is a member of the Sex Work Policy Group. Kemal will be based in Turkey.
Staci Ryan - POLICY OFFICER: advocacy and campaigns
Staci has a strong academic background driven by a passion for the promotion of sex workers rights through the inclusion of sex workers’ voices and experiences in research and public debate. She was awarded an ESRC PhD scholarship in 2009, and has spent three years working on a comparative study of sex workers and access to justice in Scotland and New Zealand. Staci has completed projects for the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective and is currently on the board at SCOT-PEP, which has given her both activist and campaigning experience. Staci will be based in Scotland and Thailand.
