World AIDS Day 2020: Centering Key Populations in the Global HIV Response

This year, we commemorate World AIDS Day in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global health crisis that has caused immense human misery and economic insecurity. Despite the devastation caused by the ongoing pandemic, we call on global policymakers and donors to not lose sight of their goal to end the HIV epidemic, which is now entering its fifth decade. The epidemic continues to disproportionately devastate our communities.

Organisers of HIV2020 Issue Recommendations to IAS Ahead of Virtual Conferences

The organisers of HIV2020 Online, of which NSWP is a member, published a set of ten recommendations aimed at the International AIDS Society (IAS), which has been criticised for its decision to bring this year’s International AIDS Conference to the United States of America (U.S.). Though both conferences will now take place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, advocates argue that the decision reflects weak community engagement.

HIV2020: Community Reclaiming the Global Response, is scheduled to take place on Zoom from July through October of 2020.

The HIV2020 alliance has decided to organise the community-led event to provide an alternative for individuals who cannot or will not participate in the AIDS2020 virtual conference. Its goal is to offer new opportunities to reaffirm the leading role communities play in the global HIV response. ​

Las personas que ejercen el trabajo sexual se ven afectadas de manera desproporcionada por el VIH a nivel mundial. Se estima que la prevalencia del VIH entre esta población puede ser hasta 34 veces más alta que en la población general. El acceso a los productos básicos para la prevención, detección y acceso al tratamiento del VIH es fundamental para la salud y el bienestar de las personas que ejercen el trabajo sexual en todo el mundo.
