Who do you work with?:
OTRAS Works for and with sexworkers regardless gender, race, class, religión or orientation. For us, any kind of sex work is work, from full service, webcam, porn performers, massagists, etc. OTRAS is the first legal and registered Labor Union for sex workers in Spain.
How are sex workers involved in your organisation?:
OTRAS has been created and lead by sexworkers. Responsibility and decisión making positions, such as the Executive Commission are fully covered by current and former sexworkers.
Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?:
Oppose the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and support its recognition as work
Critique the trafficking paradigm that conflates representations of sex work, migration, and mobility
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Oppose human rights abuses, including coercive programming, mandatory testing, raids and forced rehabilitation
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
Advocate for the economic empowerment and social inclusion of sex workers as sex workers
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face:
OTRAS in particular faces the challenge of its own survival. Since it became public, our Union is under attack of the Spanish Government as it doesn't consider sex work as unionizable. Like anywhere in the world, sexworkers from OTRAS face stigmatization, criminalization due to municipal bylaws and terrible working conditions when working for thirth parties.
Describe other areas of your work:
In OTRAS we are aware that intersectionality is absolutely crucial for understanding better and try to tackle more effectively the issues we face, that's why trans and migrant sexworkers have a main role in our organization. We have strong alliances with migrant and LGBTQI+ collectives in Spain.
