VAMP celebrates Raksha Bandhan

The commercial sex workers (CSWs) of Sangli celebrated Raksha Bandhan on Saturday by tying rakhis to local police officers and social workers.

This was the first time that CSWs in Sangli had an occasion to celebrate the festival. Local NGO Veshya Mahila AIDS Nirmulan Sanstha had organised the event at the red light area in Premnagar near Swarup theatre in Sangli.

“The Raksha Bandhan was arranged to boost the morale of sex workers,” the NGO secretary, Deepak Chavan, said.

Nearly 50 sex workers including Sharda Shinde, Goda Busani, Janka Chanale, Sushila Mhetre and Shobha Kedar participated in the function.

The police inspector of Vishrambaug police station, Bhimanand Nalawde; police inspector of Sangli city police station, Sharad Jambhale; Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation primary school board chairman, Padmakar Jagdale and the activists of the different youth mandals participated in the festival.

The sex workers tied rakhis to the guests and also offered them sweets.“Brothers pledge to protect their sisters on the day of Raksha Bandhan. We also deserve the same pledge, love and affection from our rakhi brothers,” CSW Amirbi Sheikh said.
