Same Old Story: Sex Workers Targeted through 'Hygienist Policies' Before the World Cup in Brazil

As the World Cup 2014 in Brazil gets closer, several human rights violations against sex workers can be observed across the country. Current public policies related to sex work is being framed under anti-trafficking efforts and combatting sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, as part of the agreement between the Brazilian government and FIFA.

New Resource: New Directions in Research on Human Trafficking

Ron Weitzer, a well-known Professor of Sociology at George Washington University for his work on sex work and trafficking, specifically in the US but also Europe has published a new paper entitled: “ New Directions in Research on Human Trafficking” in the ANNALS  of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

New Resource Critiquing Trafficking Narratives During the London Olympics 2012

The Central America Women's Network (CAWN) commisioned a report entited: "Exploitation and Trafficking of Women: Critiquing narratives during the London Olympics 2012" to inform its work around the role of civil society and the media in shaping public understanding of different forms of exploitation experienced by women, in particular migrant women, in the context of major sporting events.

Este informe trata de las diversas formas de explotación que experimentan las mujeres migrantes en el mercado de trabajo y cómo la legislación diseñada para vigilar la inmigración y prevenir la trata a menudo no protege a estas mujeres vulnerables. El informe también examina el papel de los medios de comunicación en la objetivación de las mujeres migrantes a través de sus retratos a menudo negativos y estereotipados. Exploitation and trafficking of women. Critiquing narratives during the London Olympics 2012

This report deals with the various forms of exploitation experienced by migrant women in the labour market and how legislation designed to police immigration and prevent trafficking often fails to protect these vulnerable women. The report also examines the role of the media in objectifying migrant women through their often negative, stereotypical portrayals.
