African Sex Workers Alliance Organises Conference

Regional Correspondent Africa

The African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) is co-organising a key populations pre-conference for this year’s International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) in Zimbabwe. ASWA is teaming up with the African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHER) and Gender Dynamix, to host the pre-conference themed ‘Key Populations, Health and Human Rights  - Invest in communities!’

The aim of the pre-conference is to exchange ideas, critically reflect and identify priority health and human rights-related issues for gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people, sex workers, people who use drugs and people living with HIV in Africa.

The conference wishes to raise awareness on key populations, human rights and HIV as an “unfinished business” of the Millennium Development Goals. It also aims to bridge the knowledge gap on the health and human rights needs of key populations in Africa.

Additionally, organisers hope to strengthen the engagement and capacities of stakeholders in the context of the HIV response and in the process for developing the post-2015 development framework.

The preconference is open for registration via It will be held on the 28-29 of November and will precede the opening ceremony of the main ICASA event. For further information please contact:
