It was a noble sentiment when India’s highest court proclaimed that sex workers had a right to life and dignity, just like anybody else under the country’s constitution.

Dismissing an appeal by a man sentenced to life for murdering a sex worker, the Supreme Court also directed the government to provide vocational training to sex workers to help rehabilitate them.

Sex workers in Uganda, including NSWP member WONETHA, have criticised comments made by Henry Luke Orombi, Anglican archbishop of Uganda.  The Archbishop suggested police should arrest sex workers as well as the men who pay for sex.  For the full story as reported in Afrik-News see here.

International Sex Worker Rights Day – 3rd March 2011


On 3rd March 2001 in India many thousands of sex workers took to the streets to protest against the violence and discrimination they experienced – this led to the creation of International Sex Worker Rights Day.

This day in March also marks the day, in 2009, when sex workers came together from southern, western and eastern Africa to form the African Sex Worker Alliance, which now has members in many African countries.
