Sex workers are integral to Azaad Titliyan's structure and operations. They are direct members of the organization, ensuring their voices and needs are at the forefront. Azaad Titliyan collaborates with 11 community-based organizations, collectively serving around 5,000 sex workers across India. This network allows sex workers to be directly involved in and benefit from the organization's initiatives, advocating for their rights and well-being.
Sex workers with which we work face two primary challenges:
A, Legal complexities and discrimination: Recent laws in India have created a complicated legal landscape for sex workers. This is particularly problematic in the northern regions, where many sex workers are not well-informed about their rights, including fundamental rights. As a result, they often face discrimination and unjust arrests by law enforcement due to this lack of awareness.
B. Limited access to health services: Sex workers struggle with inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, including abortion care. This issue is especially critical for sex workers living with HIV, who require specialized healthcare. The lack of these essential services puts their health and well-being at significant risk, compounding the challenges they already face in their work and daily lives.
Azaad Titliyan's work extends to several other crucial areas which are; Mental health support for sex workers, Education programs for children of sex workers, Specialized assistance for sex workers living with HIV, Support for aged sex workers, including skill-building initiatives, Provision of shelter homes for vulnerable sex workers
